US Court Dismisses Lawsuit Against Binance and CZ Over Terror Financing Allegations
A recent ruling by a US federal court has cleared Binance and its founder, Changpeng Zhao, of allegations linking the cryptocurrency exchange to terrorist financing.
U.S. District Judge Jeannette Vargas dismissed the lawsuit, emphasizing that the plaintiffs failed to establish a credible connection between Binance or Zhao and the purported terrorist activities.
The suit was filed by a group of 535 plaintiffs, consisting of victims and relatives from attacks allegedly financed through transactions on Binance over several years.
They claimed that hundreds of millions of dollars in crypto assets were channeled to foreign terrorist organizations through the exchange, implicating Binance in nearly 64 attacks globally.
However, Judge Vargas determined that the plaintiffs did not present sufficient evidence indicating that Binance or Zhao knowingly facilitated these operations.
The ruling characterized the relationship between Binance and the alleged terrorist groups as a mere "commercial relationship" stemming from standard trading activities.
Additionally, the judge highlighted the excessive length of the plaintiffs' 891-page complaint, which she deemed unnecessarily verbose given the serious allegations.
Though the court dismissed the case, it did allow the plaintiffs the chance to amend and resubmit their claims.
Both Zhao and Binance have strongly condemned terrorism and stated that the lawsuit appears to exploit previous legal challenges faced by the exchange.
In light of the ruling, Binance reaffirmed its commitment to compliance and denounced the unfounded accusations made against it.
