Stablecoin Controversy: Stripe's Bridge Denies Venezuelan Truck Shipment

Recent reports have emerged regarding Stripe's stablecoin subsidiary, Bridge Ventures Inc., allegedly linked to the shipment of trucks to Venezuela.

Documents indicate that 12 Mitsubishi trucks were sent to a company in Venezuela associated with former president Hugo Chávez's family.

Bridge Ventures, acquired by Stripe for $1.1 billion, categorically denies any involvement with this shipment, attributing the issue to possible clerical errors.

A spokesperson clarified that the company had no engagement in the transaction, which raises questions about the authenticity of the documents used.

The buyer listed in the shipment, Thundernet, C.A., is an internet provider with ties to Grupo Nemer, a conglomerate linked to Chávez’s regime.

Investigative reports have previously connected Grupo Nemer with high-ranking officials within the Venezuelan government, complicating the situation further.

Stripe and Bridge's reputation for compliance has been questioned due to past connections to Venezuelan entities and a problematic compliance record.

Despite not being on the OFAC's Specially Designated Nationals list, the sanctions against Venezuela might apply to associated entities.

The shipment's pathway from Dubai to New Jersey, utilizing the same email address for both buyer and seller, adds to the confusion.
