China and Thailand's Crypto Tangle: Arrests and Investigations Unearth Complex Scam Operations
Authorities in Thailand have recently apprehended two Chinese nationals, Wu Di and Zhou Zongyon, connected to a sizable cryptocurrency scam and kidnapping. Wu, 27, was arrested in a lavish pool villa in Pattaya, which she rented with Zhou, her fugitive boyfriend wanted by Interpol for kidnapping. This duo allegedly defrauded victims of over 600 million baht ($17.7 million), including a Thai teacher who lost 1.5 million baht. Wu's deception involved creating fictitious investment opportunities on Facebook, targeting individuals to invest in non-existent funds. Initially, smaller investments returned minimal profits to build trust, only to defraud larger sums later which the victims could not recover. Evidence found on Wu's phone indicated a luxurious lifestyle funded by the scam, with frequent travels across Southeast Asia. The stolen money was quickly funneled through 'mule' accounts into cryptocurrencies via exchanges like Binance and ended up in Wu’s wallet in Cambodia. Despite Wu's denial, claiming her ex-boyfriend was responsible for the transactions, Thai police have linked her account to 63 cases of fraud. The police crackdown continues, with three accomplices already detained as investigations proceed.
